Comparison
Stolon and Dolt
Dolt is the nearest peer: a SQL database that branches, diffs and merges data the way git handles code. Stolon does it behind the Postgres wire protocol.
As of 26 September 2026.
| Dolt / Doltgres | Stolon | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | a SQL database you can fork, clone, branch, merge, push and pull like a git repository; Dolt is MySQL-compatible, Doltgres Postgres-compatible (both Apache-2.0) | a Postgres-compatible database with branch and merge as SQL statements; closed source |
| Branch, diff, merge | exposed in SQL through system tables, functions and procedures; also push and pull between copies | CREATE DATABASE, MERGE DATABASE … [DRY RUN], FOR SYSTEM_TIME AS OF |
| Beside the rows | (not compared here) | a branch also carries code references, such as a git SHA, and an agent's recorded decisions |
| Hosted price | Hosted Dolt: a trial instance at $50/month (t2.medium, 50 GB); other instance prices at hosted.doltdb.com/pricing. DoltHub Pro: $5/month up to 5 GB of private data, then $1/GB-month | no per-branch fee on paid plans; prices published at launch |
| Self-hosted | open source; run it anywhere | a single-tenant binary |
